There are multiple styles and types of roofing on the market today, and asphalt roll roofing and asphalt shingles are among them. With 4 out of every 5 homes roofed in asphalt shingles, there is a style and color available for most home roofing needs.

What are Asphalt Shingles?

Asphalt shingles are manufactured in two ways, organic and fiberglass. Organic asphalt roof shingles are felt shingles saturated with asphalt, installed and then topped with adhesive asphalt and crushed ceramic. Fiberglass asphalt shingles are made from a base layer of fiberglass mat, which is then coated with a layer of asphalt and minerals to make the shingles durable and waterproof.

The asphalt shingles themselves are available in multiple styles. Strip shingles are typically three times as long as they are wide, and can be installed with various cutouts and shapes, to create shadows and other stylized effects on the roof.
