The darkness of Chabrol's universe can be traced back to the early Chabrol short film, La Muette which was made for the portmanteau film Paris vu par… (1965).
La Muette recalls the horror brewing just beneath the prim image of a haute bourgeois family and their eloquent lifestyle. The film unusually starred Chabrol as the patriarch figure of the family and his then wife Stéphane Audran, as his on-screen bored housewife. Chabrol’s and Audran’s characters remain unnamed – only credited as the father and the mother.
A Child's View
The short film is viewed through the eyes of their only child – a young boy who returns home from school, only to be ignored by his mother. The child’s mother is anxious with her issues, as she is made well aware of her husband’s continuing affair with the young and beautiful house maid. The mother continues to remain distant, spending her time alone.
