Marijuana is the most commonly used illegal drug in the United States and Canada according to the U.S National Institute on Drug Abuse and the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health in Canada. More teenagers are using marijuana at an ever younger age. Research indicates that the earlier teens start using pot, the more likely it is that they will become dependent on it and the more likely it is that marijuana will serve as a gateway to other drugs.
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, in 2006, 14.8 million Americans age twelve or older used marijuana at least once in the month prior to being surveyed. Of teens admitted for treatment for marijuana dependence, 56 percent had first used the drug by age fourteen, and 26 percent had begun by age twelve. In Canada, marijuana use among teens is higher than it's been in over 20 years.
